How to set achievable business goals and actually follow through
My aim for today's post is to help you understand why you may be struggling to follow-through on tasks, even when you have a really clear vision for your successful and abundant business.
Why You're Not Following Through on Business Goals Even with a Clear Vision
I'm willing to bet that your lack of follow-through isn't due to a shortage of planners, diaries, schedules, or tools.
Chances are you already have a really clear vision of what your successful life and business looks like.
And you may even have clearly defined goals and action steps.
But still, you find yourself doing anything but following through.
Why is that?
It may be because of:
Overwhelm:
You have too many ideas, and don't know where to start
Perfectionism:
Your Fear of not doing it perfectly is preventing you from doing anything at all
Lack of self trust and confidence:
You've tried so many things, invested in so many programs and strategies and taken lots of action before but you still aren't seeing the success you crave.
Subconscious resistance:
You have a deep seated fear of failure or fear of success
How to overcome mental blocks preventing business success
Your brain is trying so hard to protect you and keep you safe that it's sabotaging your attempts to break through to your next level of success. Your brain is wired for survival, not for growth.
And when we are doing something risky and uncomfortable, your brain freaks out and will throw anything in your face to get you to stop what you're doing and stay small and safe.
Have you experienced this?
As I'm recording this episode, I'm in the process of my next uplevel.
In an instant, I can go from feeling amazing and inspired and expansive to feeling anxious, afraid or just really sad.
My brain might show me an image of some disaster that could happen. Or it might remind me of some horrible past experience. Sometimes it works and I'll follow that path – relive a crappy past experience or conversation and wallow for a bit. Sometimes what I'm shown is so ridiculous that I can laugh it off.
The trick to getting through this, I'm finding is to learn to recognize what's happening and be compassionate to myself. And saying something like "thanks for showing me that shit-show. Now pipe down, I've got a job to do!"
But it's impossible to see what we can't see.
That's why I recommend investing in a coach to help you break through to the next level of success.
A coach can help you identify and overcome the limiting beliefs holding you back from achieving your goals.
How to choose Goal-Setting language that empowers your business growth
If words like goals, action steps or tasks make you want to curl yourself into the foetal position and rock for a few hours, exchange them for words that make you feel expansive.
You could use:
Intentions
Milestones
Dreams
Priorities
Aspirations, or
Shifts
Don't underestimate the power of words—sometimes, a simple shift in language can open you up to new possibilities, making your journey feel lighter and more aligned with your true self.
After all, you're building your business your way, so you get to choose the easiest and most aligned path forward.
When we focus on the why behind the goal, you'll be more likely to follow through.

Or follow these steps to turn your ultimate business vision into actionable steps that you'll follow through on
Step 1: Outline your ultimate business vision
And get clear on why this vision matters to you
Step 2: Prioritize the top 3 goals
Focus on the ones that once achieved get you closer to this vision
Step 3: Define your success metrics
For these 3 key goals, decide how you will measure your success.
Step 4: Break down your goals
Break each goal into actionable tasks and identify potential obstacles that may arise, like:
- skills you need to acquire
- habits you need to change
- limiting thoughts you'll need to reframe
- fears you'll need to overcome
- discomfort you'll need to embrace
If you can anticipate these challenges ahead of time, you'll be able to step into the situation with confidence and navigate them more effectively.
Step 5: Calendar Management
Add these tasks to your calendar. Allow extra time to ramp up, conduct research, and let your creativity flow, as well as time to actually complete the tasks.
This is crucial because many of us don't wake up feeling excited to tackle things that push us out of our comfort zones. Building a business involves not just strategy but also personal development, blended with a truck load of discomfort – welcome to the party!
Tips for Ramping up / getting in the mood to tackle your tasks
You could:
- Acknowledge your fear or identify a limiting belief that's preventing you from following through.
- Do a quick but powerful workout
- Listen to your favourite son
- Scroll socials (if that makes you feel good)
- Cuddle your kids, pets or partner
- Do a guided meditation or some breathwork to calm your nervous system down so you can be your most creative and calm self
Something I've found really helpful is taking a few minutes to step into my Queen Energy where I feel confident that I'm doing the best thing for my audience.
It's helps me to get out of the fear so I can follow through.
How to run effective CEO meetings for business growth and goal achievement
Step 6: Schedule your CEO meeting at the end of each week. Make this meeting non-negotiable.
Use this time to:
- Reflect on Progress to see how far you've come
- Adjust goals and action steps as needed
- Celebrate wins so you stay motivated
Answer these questions:
- What did I accomplish this week?
- What worked well, and what didn't?
- How can I improve next week?
So, to recap, I hope you now have more of an understanding and more compassion for yourself if you haven't been following through.
You're likely striving for something that no one you know personally has achieved before and that can be really exciting and also really scary.
Aim for progress over perfection. Focus on small wins to build momentum.
There's nothing wrong with you and you're more than capable of reaching your next level of success, you may just need to make a few tweaks to your approach and get some support.
